Default Fragged 4wd/transfer case???

Have a 2001 2500 4X4 HD diesel, and was driving the other night through 1/2 inch of hail - stuck it in 4wd and kept driving. A few miles later, the hail had disappeared, road was still wet, and at about 63 mph (yeah, I know, too fast for 4WD - actually forgot I was in 4!) going down hill heard a whine/grind and thump. Slowed down and took it out of 4wd immediately, then tried putting back in, but wouldn't engage (handle wouldn't go all the way). Pulled over and although (at a stop only) I can get it "into" both 4H and 4L, the truck won't move in either. If I push it, I get grinds or thumps but something is obviously locked up. Truck works fine in 2H.

My gut tells me I fragged something in the transfer case, but could use some advice before I tear into things.

Thanks!

I believe your assumption is correct. Hopefully, it's an input shaft and not the gear set inside!

Your speed isn't going to be what caused a failure. Most likely driving on asphalt (even if it's wet) is the culprit. It sounds to me like you have a mode hub problem.

Thanks MADDOG & Remerson228. Guess I'll put the wrenches to it this weekend. Can I pull the transfer case and front driveline and run w/o them for a while, or is it not that simple?
Thx,
Martin
