K so my next step is to replace the heater core. But today i noticed that with the truck at normal temp where the heater core is it is hot to the touch. Could it be something else, or should i just go ahead with the core swap?
Ya whats happening is when i turn the heater on whether defrost floor or combo it will blow out fairly warm for about 5 seconds and then go to cool air. I have replaced the t-stat, also put a new radiator (not cause of the heater), am going to flush the system this weekend.
Ok, I'm going to try and break it down based on what you've said.
1. Both heater hoses are hot to the touch. Not the radiator hoses. This means the heater core is not blocked.
2. You can switch from floor to defrost so the door is working.
Certainly doesn't sound like a heater core issue to me. One other thing to look at is the temp control lever. Does the temp coming out change when moving the lever/knob?

That's about the only thing left in my mind.[/QUOTE]
Yes when i move the temp knob it changes temp. Goes from ambient temp to air conditioning cold
Chances are there's a film built up on the inside of the heater core that's preventing heat transfer and probably contributed to the cause of the leak. This is usually the result of a poorly maintained cooling system.
Man that sucks . I was hoping it wasn't gonna need a core . It's a bit of work to do . Now your gonna take the risk of damaging your dash if it isn't already broken up .
Well the core is officially done. Biggest PITA!!!! Unfortunately my dash was already starting to crack so now there are some pieces missing out of the top of it but o well. Nothing a little duct tape and super glue cant fix LOL Also my blend door isnt working properly either. I now have a bolt holding the door open. But hey at least I have nice hot air coming out just in time for winter time here in Utah!!! Thanks everybody for the help and advice in my struggles.
Hey guys,
I think I know how to fix your problem. It looks to me that very likely the problem here is a broken blend door. Removing the dash, replacing the heater core etc. are way too time consuming and expensive. You can access the blend doors through the glove box and replace them yourself...I did this a few months back and it saved me the 1100$ dealer quote and only took me an hour. The repair kit is called the "heatertreater" and they make a dodge ram blend door repair kit. Was totally worth it for me. hope this helps!
Check the thermal relay on the passenger's side...I think yours has 4 wires on the plug and a 7mm screw. If it's bad the door wont open because it's not registering the heat. More often than not when you unplug it you'll see if it has bad contacts or not. Passenger's foot damage.
