From what I can come up with , a 2002 Durango does not have a temp sender for the guage . It must get it's signal from the coolant temp sensor for the computer . If it were me , I would get the right drill bit and the correct pipe tap and drill and tap a hole for the temperature guage sender unit . I would keep coolant in the motor (maybe even just water while your doing this procedure . The water will want to come out while your drilling , so you won't get much shavings in the cooling system . Even if it does , it's only aluminum and shouldn't hurt anything . I have never seen this . I would of put money on it being there . Have you checked to see if there isn't a drilled and tapped hole there already , maybe with a plug in it ?
