Default check engine codes

I was wondering if there was a way to retrieve the check engine codes without using a scanner on a 2011 Ram 1500? I would like to have a general idea what the problem is before I take it to the dealer.

some auto parts stores have a Code Reader, it is not as good as the Reader that the dealership uses, it points you in a General Direction to look at, usually it does not pinpoint the problem

I suggest that you NEVER tell a dealers service dept. what a code reader indicated, just tell them the vehicles symptoms. If you tell them what you discovered & that they should replace this or that, they Will change it, even if they know for a fact that it is not the problem

I would suggest, don't let anyone clear the codes, leave them stored for the dealer to fix & then clear them

thanks for the info. the check engine light just went off this morning, but I'm going to go ahead and call the dealership anyways and have them check things over.
