Default And it begins - Front end work

Well, I knew it was coming. Having bought my truck less than a week ago, my visual inspection revealed that the sway bar end links were completely shot, and the tie rod ends were well worn. Coming home from Karate class last night, I hit a hard bump in the road at 45-50 mph and DW took over, causing many a cuss word to be said from my wife in the passenger seat.
I've spent the morning getting all the replacement part #'s online (as well as prices ) and after tearing the truck down for a better inspection this coming weekend, I'll be breaking out the checkbook.
I'm torn on just going ahead and replacing the U and L ball joints as well. Looks like it will take 2-3 hours each side to break down the knuckles, a job I am not looking forward to.
Are ball joints an issue on these trucks and is there anything I should be aware before tearing into the front end?
The truck has 105k miles and from all indications, original parts.

I would invest in the ball joints myself. Don't forget to check the track bar, stabilizer and axle joints while you're at it. One of my coworkers just rebuilt his front end for the dreaded death wobble and upgraded his steering linkage (all of it) the the heavier parts used on the 4500/5500 Ram. Death wobble cured!

I thought about upgrading to heavier parts myself but since the truck is not a DD and get about 1k a month in miles, I'm just going back stock.
Curious though, is the larger steering linkage a direct swap or does it require some fabbing?

Hi I just joined the fourm as I was informed this morning that my 05 3500 needs an outer tyrod on both sides. The suggestion was to go with the beefier front end evidently encouraged by Dodge but from what I can see is not on a recall. Not being mechanically inclined I'm feeling at the mercy of the dealer as the cost is considerable. Is there any awareness of this out there? Thanks John

Everything he did was a direct bolt in. The tie rod ends fit the holes in the stock knuckles with no problems as did the drag link and pitman arm.

You don't have to upgrade unless you choose to and there are no recalls or bullitens regarding the tie rod ends. There is a recall (H46) concerning the innder drag ling end and steering damper. If you haven't had this recall performed or haven't received a notice about it, call your dealer with your VIN and they can tell you if you need to bring it in to have the recall performed.

Got it tore down tonight. Ball joints and track bar are surprisingly tight but the tie rod ends move around like a pencil in a mason jar.
