Default Integrated Brake Controller Problems.

First time poster, great board. Anyone having trouble with the new integrated trailer brake controllers? I am about to buy a new 3500, and a friend of mine had a lot of trouble with the controller. I drive hot shot, and pull a 30' gooseneck loaded with up to 15k of payload. I've heard the controller can't be removed, and I can't find a 3500 on a car lot without it. Needless to say, I have to be able to stop that trailer. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

We haven't had any controller problems out of the ones we've sold at our dealership.

All I can tell you is I tried to purchase one to add to my 2010 Ram 1500 after I purchased the truck and the dealer told me that there was a note added to the part number stating that they cannot sale the part as an add-on until some fixes were made in November of this year. They stated they could only sell me the part if it was as a replacement to original equipment on the truck even though I have both plugs, class IV hitch, 3.92 gearing, 4/7 pin trailer plugs, etc.

So, I guess there was a problem at least with the add-on part. Not sure about any stock issues.

You can still purchase them online using the part number, just not the VIN number. But you will have to have the dealer update through dealer connect in order for the flash to show the trailer brake in the EVIC. My dealer ordered mine on Monday. The supposed "fix" coming in November I beleive is a Mopar Accessories add on that will work with the single plug and the dual plug. Never have figured out why some have 2 plugs and some have 1 plug in the harness.

No issues at all. It's a decent BC, and having the info on the dash is freakin' great. You could get an aftermarket unit, and hang it under your dash, that may have a slight edge over the integrated unit, but for the most part, the Dodge unti should serve you very well. I tow a 19k, 40' 5er with the best aftermarket BC unit I could find, and I tow a 9k 23', boat/jet ski trailer combo with the integrated BC you are asking about. Other than adjustment style and the ability to turn off the unit during back-ups, I have NOT noticed ANY difference between the two.

Sorry, should have clarified; The aftermarket BC I use is on my 3500, and the integrated BC is on the 1500.

Welcome to the forum. I have not heard of any consistent or chronic problems with those controllers. Your friend might be in the minority.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I tend to believe that they wouldn't put in the controller if it doesn't work well, but I thought i'd ask. Just trying to avoid having to special order a truck to put in an aftermarket controller.
