Default High Idle RPM, and (maybe) tranny problems?

I have a 2001 Ram 1500 5.9 4x4 club cab and there are a lot of things I am worried that are wrong with it. I know that Dodges are notorious for tranny problems, so how do you tell if it needs a new one? A mechanic friend told me mine is probably on its second or third. Also, it idles at 1200 instead of 600 RPM when the engine is cold. Does anyone know of a good Dodge specialist in the SF Bay Area who will take a look and find everything wrong for a good price?
Thanks
