I don't know about radios newer than 1970s
on older radios, there was a adjustment close to the antenna cable, it is an adjustment screw that allows you to adjust the frequencies according to your location, sort of like a radio that is tuned for Florida, may not work as well in say New York, so you could adjust the frequencies.
It may be best just to find a radio that you know works, first checking your antenna wire, it may just need to be replaced
Another option is the spend $80 for a radio that is AM/FM/CD player, you can also get them with Ipod connectors
