Keep the fluids clean and be sure to follow the maintenance schedule except the oil change!!!! Every 6 months or 6000 Miles? Huh? Shortage of sewing machine oil that is what we are using it seems the stuff is like water. Well I am sorry but I have had my truck 2 years in March and it has had at least 10 oil changes or more I am old school on the oil change 3000 miles or 2/3 months depending on miles. Never more than 3 months no matter if only 1000 miles. I know I am Canadian but I prefer to talk in US measurements...Metric system is super easy but I grew up with the other so.....I decided today to start texting the old way LOL.

So far I have had a 1996, 2001, 2006, 2008, and now a 2011 dodge ram pickup. When you break it in, drive it as you would on any roadway, including the highway. You don't have to drive like a turtle! Nice and slow! You can safely drive the speed limit for proper breakin! Once in a while you can spike the throttle to help with the breakin, just don't over do it! In otherwords while driving to the highway speeds, accelerate quickly then back off, stay the speed limit! You don't have to do this, but earlier dodge books suggested it! And as guinnessboy mentioned. Don't be overly dumb and jack rabbit the throttle. You have to breakin the transmission and differentials and transfer case. Regular driving as you always do usually at highway speeds will do just fine! The quick spike accelration to highway speeds just helps with the break in. And remember to change the oil to get out the new contaminants! And when the trans, diffs. and transfer case is do, get the fluids changed. I think you will do just fine! This is my fifth dodge truck and have broken them all in this way!

All the advice here is good, but I especially liked the comment about early oil changes, great idea!! I have just driven my new ones just like the old ones without over reving.

I varied the speed and rpms (60 mph or less, rpms below 3000) till about 625 miles........plus no cruise control.

put the pedal to the floor and let that engine and pcm know u mean business. program it now for full power. I drove mine hard after 200 miles, reset the pcm and memory and went out and drove it hard.

Default ooops**

It only had about 27 miles on it when I gunned it but I only did it twice. I hope I did not screw anything up. I did not even test drive the RAM before I bought it. I saw that the color and model I wanted was in transit and I bought it before it was even on the lot. I knew I wanted a RAM and did not need to test drive any of them. I'll be sure to vary the speeds and not get on it for a while. I like the idea of changing the oil early. I know this is an old thread but I just joined yesterday 2/16/2011.

Amen. I read this entire thread thinking I was going to learn the best way to steal (break in) a truck. Was hoping I could use that knowledge to fund future mods.

Default Break in

Not sure there is a proper way to break in. The cheapest is probably to take out the windshield as it would involve the least labor. But if you have to drive it, taking out the rear passenger window would be best because you could red neck it after with a piece of cardboard and still use the mirrors.
