Arrow What type of oil to use?

I have an 06 1500 Hemi with 58,000 miles and I'm wondering what kind of oil I should run. I heard that you have to run 5w 30, due to the MDS, if you don't then it will mess up the timing of the MDS. I was wondering if synthetic would be a good choice or not?? So pretty much just want to know, synthetic or regular, and what brand is best? Thank you!!

starting in 2006, the Rams got the MDS system & it REQUIRES 5w 20

If you have an MDS engine (all current 5.7 engines!), only use 5W20 oil. You need the right oil. If the owner’s manual says something else, follow its advice - but don’t be convinced by a mechanic. Insist on the right grade and if they don’t use it...get a refund and go somewhere else. (You can quote TSB 09-015-04 and 09-013-04, “Vehicles with the Multiple Displacement System must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the MDS.”) Read more at http://www.allpar.com/mopar/new-mopa...ktrack=kcplink

In my opinion:
Mobile 1 5W-20 synthetic. You can run dino oil if you prefer, it's totally up to you and won't have any adverse effects
Other good oils are Royal Purple, Castrol, & Amsoil
I like the Mobile 1 myself because even Walmart carries it, usually $22 for a 5 quart jug
As far as oil filters go, Mopar, Wix, & Napa are considered 3 of the best for the Hemi
i use the K&N air filter

Well, it's actually 5W20 you want to use. As for which is better... that will be debated until he end of time I used to use Amsoil, but due to difficulties in getting a hold of it, I switched to Royal Purple. Most people use the Mobil 1 synthetic to good effect. The benefits of a good synthetic out weigh the additional cost; with better lubrication, wear reduction, and longer between oil changes.

Thanks guys!! Ya that was a typo on my part i meant to say 5w20, I heard good things about Amsoil, There are about 3 dealers within 15 miles of my place so getting that wouldn't be too hard for me! I think I'm gonna go with a synthetic oil and a NAPA oil filter!! Thanks for your input guys, it really helped!!!

I use 5W30 I have almost 80,000 on my truck, need a little thicker as the engine breaks in but not too thick and my truck is super smooth. I use Valvoline Full Synthetic and love it... also I use a K&N Oil Filter, costs more but worth it!

Default Oil

I don't recommend synthetic due to the fact that if you don't like it, they say you are not to go back to regular. Far as the 5w-30 to something else, that depends on the type of enviroment that you are in. I run 10-30 in my truck, but I have also seen others us 10-40. You don't seem to have a lot of miles on, so you could easily use the 10-30 if you wanted too and it will not harm your truck in anyway.

^^^ Wrong ^^^ The HEMI with MDS requires 5W20 as stated in the owners manual. As for synthetic v.s. Dino its a personal choice. Synthetic will allow for longer drain times and is less likely to sludge. Dino's fine if you change frequently. Nothing wrong with switching back and forth but why would you ????
