Default service schedules

slightly puzzled here.

now my official manual is telling me to change the oil every 6 months or 10,000 km, which ever comes 1st

but the truck is now telling me i'm due an oil change i've only owned it 3 months and driven 4000 km so officially it should be no where near needing a change. just confused as to why the truck thinks it needs a change already

I am running into the same issue with my truck I have had it for about 9months now and have just reached about 13000 km, the truck tells me it needs a change every 4000km, I am curious why it is doing that as well. The sales guy i had was bragging how you can 12k km without an oil change!

Keep in mind, that the computer roughly tracks your driving habits and adjusts the schedule accordingly. So if you drove only in town to get to work 5 days a week, you'd get a change indication sooner than your neighbor who drove to work on the freeway everyday for 20+ miles each way. Point being that a fully warmed engine (meaning water AND oil) at 2K+ RPM going down the highway (or elsewhere but under some load) can burn off a lot of crap in the oil, much better. All that said, does your driving situation, or habits, seem to fit this possibility?

not really, whilst i dont do long freeway drives on a daily basis, i dont sit idle in traffic either as we have no traffic so i'm doing between 40 to 70 mph all the time and often only come to a halt to drop the oh off.

whilst i do drive approx 25 miles a day, i prob dont get long enough to have everything warmed up on every trip.

still i'm less than impressed that it wants an oil change after 2485 miles !

the only time that you will want to change oil before 3,000 miles, is your first oil change, some people want to make sure that the catch the filings in the engine, that the engine builder left behind. After that you will likely get the warning at 2,400 miles, it just lets you know that 3,000 miles is coming up soon.
You can temporarily clear the oil warning with the key & gas pedal trick
go by your trucks owners manual as to oil changes, if its even in there

My oil service light lit up at 4000kms too. I was told that this was just for the first oil change. The next one will be at 14000kms.
I'm wondering if this is true, seeing they didn't reset the computer when they did the oil change. I did it myself when I left the dealer.
For those that don't know the key & gas pedal trick
Here's how to reset the service light
1) turn your ignition to the On position but don't start it.
2) press the gas pedal 3 times to the floor.
3) turn ignition off.
Your service light should be off on the next start up.

The sales guys don't set the oil change service interval on the trucks, the factory does. The factory setting assumes conventional oil, which has a lower service interval than synthetic oils.

I do my conventional oil changes at 3K miles. I do my synthetic oil changes at 5K miles in the SRT. Conservative intervals to be sure but oil is cheaper than an engine rebuild.

I wonder if its different for RAMS in the states. I've got just over 3200 miles and no indicator of any kind has appeared. And the users manual does state every 6k miles for oil changes. Its even that way in my 3/36k service maint. agreement

The owner's manual states...do not EXCEED 6,000 miles or 6 months, and to follow the oil change indicator if it lights before that.
