For those that have the Magnaflow's: Did you remove the resonator or leave it on?

Resonator? Where is that located and what is the difference if you remove it or leave it?

Your right about about the different sizes and the sound, but I have to say by listing to my brothers 24" magnaflow Part # 12278 on his 09 ram It sounds deep and very nice, and little to no drone when MDS kicks in, I have it comming for mine

I would reccommend that you do not remove the resonator, it will cause you truck to sound a bit funny, like a load drone sound.....well that is my experience with that

What about those of us that failed to get the stock dual outlet exhaust? I would like to replace the stock muffler with the 1-in, 2-out magnaflow and add the extra tailpipe, but would this work with only the one resonator? Or would you have to add a second resonator onto the second "new" tailpipe?

Get a SI/SO muffler and use a very short Y-pipe after the stock resonator. If I could just decide what exit/treatment to use this is what I'd do. Simple install, Dual exit look and stock resonator.

So do the single in/single out magnaflow mufflers offer anything in the way of performance gain? Or purely a sound only upgrade?

I'm sure they are freer flowing as compared to the stock muffler. As you said, they also sound better (so I'm told)! ;^)

Here is my Flowmaster 40 single in dual out. The tips are 3 inch. They fit the cuts out better.

If you like the magnaflow 18 you should check out the Mufflex 18, they take the magnaflow and weld stainless extensions on it to make a one piece bolt on
