Default Katzkins Leather Seat Upgrade Installation Write-Up Part 2

Continued...

Now reach in an line up the velcro, I mean hook and latch (not suppose to call it Velcro anymore, right?). The Motorz videos always encouraged you to "karate chop" the velcro after it is together. It's strange but it does seem to make it sit a little better. Put the zippers ends together and zip her up. Tuck everything up and your on to the seat back.

The procedure is exactly the same with the addition of cutting. This is my least favorite part of the install. You only get one chance to get it right. Feel around the top for the barrels that the headrests posts go into. Once you find them (AND YOU ARE POSITIVE IT'S THEM) poke a hole with a screwdriver or awl. I took a razor blade and opened them holes to be just big enough to stick the post through.

Now flip it onto it's front and find the tabs. They should be stretching the material. Carefully cut around them with a blade.

Finally, find the holes on the sides where the shoulder bolts were that you removed and poke a hole. I found you need to clean this out pretty well or the bolts could snag a thread and twist the material when you tighten the bolts.

Reattach the setback to the brackets and you are done. Put them back into the truck.

Removing and installing the front seats

The front seats were a little bit of a pain but not terrible. My drivers seat is powered and the whole front row is attached together being as it is a bench seat. First I had to remove the single wire connector under the seat. It was a huge pain. I don't like the thought of breaking connectors so I am always very careful. I still don't know how I got it apart but I kept working it and it came off. Next, there are 8 bolts holding down the whole row. The 4 in the back are are 18mm and the ones int the front were 10mm or 13mm or I don't remember. Then there are 6 bolts holding the seats to the center console. These I believe were 10mm. Once all the bolts are out, you can remove the seats and center console. Put them back in the reverse order.

Skinning and re-skinning the front seats

The driver and passenger front seats are basically the same. You don't need to take the seats apart except for one thing on the passenger seat. Assume this to be the same for both unless I mention otherwise. Remove the lever that allows the seat to lie back by removing the philips head screw in the center of it. On the drivers seat, if equipped, remove the cover over the power seat switches.

Remove the wheel for the lumbar support by carefully prying off the wheel only.

Then remove the bezel by removing the 2 philips head screws.

In the back of the seat where the bottom and setback come together and on the bottom of the seats, unhook all of the hooks you find. You should be able to then pull off all of the fabric. On the passenger seat, you will have to turn the seat over and unbolt the frame that attaches the seat to the floor to access on of the hooks.

I left it loose bolted so I could attach the new. You should also remove the headrest insert as you did on the rear seats. With all of the fabric removed, set the bottom pieces on. The first thing to attach (And I didn't so I had to do the passenger seat twice) are the 2 flaps that reach around the back of the seat and velcro together. Make sure the part that wraps around the bar on the seat back is snug up against it. Then pull the back flap under the seat and attach. At this point you can reattach the frame on the bottom of the passenger seat. Now attach the velcro under the leather and perform the requisite karate chop. pull the flaps under the seat and attach and cut the openings for the switches and level.

Continued

Pull the seat back skin over the seat back, zip up, and cut the holes for the headrest inserts just like the rear seats . Cut a hole for the lumbar support and reattach all the hardware.

Now the are ready to be re-installed.

Here is the final result. I hope this helps. It was nowhere near as hard as I thought it was going to be. I had about 8 hours into the whole job. I didn't really need help. I had my wife hold things a couple of times as I tried to zip things up. Still very doable by one person.

Reps!! I gotta do this myself! I'm tired of the OEM Khaki/Taupe look in my truck. Got Gunmetal grey exterior and that interior color choice just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

What or where did you find the color options for the 2005 Ram? I'm looking around myself on what I'd like to replace the taupe/khaki cloth I have right now.
