Default Truck spinning tires on boat ramp?

New 2010 crew 4x4 that I pull a boat with (521 Ranger). The last time I was at the boat ramp the truck spun the tires pulling the boat out of the water. I had to put the truck in 4x4 to get it to the top of the ramp? The ramp was wet and somewhat steep but I'm really surprised. Iv'e got 3.92 gears with 20" tires. I really like the truck and have been impressed with everything except this issue. My previous truck was an 02 Duramax 4x4 and I know there is a really big difference between the two for obvious reasons and I'm not a rookie at boat ramps either. I put 290K miles on the Duramax pulling my boat to every state from Ark to Fla to upper NY state. Is there something I can do or have I missed something obvious.

Thanks - NCdud

Default Your not crazy...

And your truck is normal! I tow with all my rigs (3 total) and launch JetSki's 8 months out of the year so this is VERY familiar to me. I have a Diesel and a gasser. (Ramp grade and moss aside...) Weight alone is a huge factor in the difference you are seeing as is torque. Your Duramax weighed a lot more and could put the power down better becasue of it, and because of the low-end torque. To be honest, with the Auto 4x4 option I think you have, (I do in my Laramie) I'd be hard-pressed not to use it during any launch. Easier on the truck and the Auto 4x4 mode won't get fussy at the hard, non slip surface at the top. I occasionally even use the 4x4 on my dually when launching, believe it or not. Mostly during very mossy conditions, or muddy/sandy conditions. I just feel it's less stress for the truck because I can keep the RPM's very low and just idle out of the mess. (Less cleanup too!)

My guess would be the tires, those Goodyear's that come on the 20's suck IMO.

I have an 09 1500 hemi 2wd that I pull my 18ft. jet boat with. I have a detroit truetrac posi and 3.92 gears. If the ramp is just wet I can come up it without spinning a tire.If I get in the moss, its all over. Thats when the tow straps come out.

Welcome to the Z. If I'm not wrong the 4x4 "auto" is only available on the Laramie.

As for your issue, there are 2 things that have bugged me since day 1 with my Ram.

1. Tires suck. Just no other way to say it.
2. Chrome clad wheels are cheap and cheesy.

Other than that I love my Ram.

Your best option for pulling the boat out is use 4x4 and when you get on level dry paved ground, switch it back to 2wd.

We have a lot of forums for all kinds of topics, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to post questions.

We LOVE pics of Rams.

Here's how to post them: http://www.ramforumz.com/forumdisplay.php?f=73

Thanks everyone, I also suspected the tires and when they are worn - goodby Goodyear. I'm also going to reposition my boat forward on the trailer to see if a little more tongue weight will help. I don't have the Laramie so it's a manual change to 4x4. I fish a lot of tournaments so I'll have to remember to tell my partners to put it in 4x4 before they burn a couple of hundred miles off of the tires not to mention the looks that I'll get. I'ts been a while since I've owned a 1/2 ton truck and there are a few things that I'll have to keep in mind when towing.

Thanks again, great fourm and I'll post a few pic's when I get a chance.

As you can see in the sig, my truck is a hemi 4x2 and it has 3.55 gears. I had the dealer install a trac-loc differential (sourced from a vendor on this forum of course) to cure my "one-wheel" drive issue when pulling my rather light 15' bass boat out of the water... At least now with a real 2-wheel drive the issue should not be so bad next spring when I go after the bass and muskies again! For those of us with 4x2 and a Hemi, the open differential does not get the job done, even on dry pavement. Ram ought to just make the trac-loc standard no matter what gear ratio you order...

Definitely the tires and possibly the weight over the tires. I'd swap those Goodyears out.
