Default Diesel/Propane Conversion?

Just wondering if anyone has done this before on a 94 Dodge 1500 5.2L. Im looking at cheaper gas options as im going through $50/week. What did this cost you?

I know in parts of Europe many folks run CNG conversions in American pickups. But gas is $8/9 a gallon and CNG is pretty cheap over there. I don't think propane or CNG would save anything over here. I think it would be cheaper to buy either a Cummins truck or if you can find a reasonably priced hemi truck. The new hemis with MDS are pretty decent on fuel, and are quick. The old 318/5.2's are great motors, but not very powerful (stock) and for some reason, pretty thirsty. If you can find non ethanol gas, your mileage will be better as well. I wish I could afford to trade my hemi for a Cummins, but my wallet says no.

Swapping in a diesel could cost you a lot more than simply upgrading to a diesel truck, even high mileage diesels should still run properly. Resleeve the motor and you've got another 500,000 miles to go. The LPG conversion is also a high initial cost, however, in the long term, you can save. On average a LPG'd diesel can get 30-35MPG, and with other performance mods, I've heard upto 45MPG, but that's on new motors with plenty of bolt-ons.

The problem with the diesel swap is you need the motor, tranny, beefed up front end to handle the extra weight, the wiring harness and sensors, then on top of that you need to do the propane injection system. Better to start with a diesel and go from there.

the 318 gas engine once used PROPANE fuel
The sole propane engine was the 318 V8, adapted with a package of special parts and processes including high alloy exhaust valve seats, premium valves, treated coolant passages, and positive valve rotators, which went through 4 million kilometers of durability testing. For 1986, new fast-burn cylinder heads increased power to 150 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Read more at http://www.allpar.com/mopar/propane.html?ktrack=kcplink

They used an Impco carburetor
