Default truck dies when steering wheel turns to right

1992 ram d150 318/auto
so i had a issue before where i had no ignition, dash lights, radio... but after replacing some fusible links under the hood the problem cleared up.

back to the current issue, I changed my steering gear box, now if I turn the wheel to the right the headlights, dash lights, and radio flicker and the truck dies. It will normally start back up, but sometimes it won't crank. If i turn the wheel back to the left it will start back up. while holding a speed above 25mph, it will stay running, but the headlamps will strobe, CEL light comes on (code 55), the anti-lock brake and overdrive lights flash, and the charging light (i cant remember if its a volts or ammeter, lol) bounces from low to high.

while idling i tried wiggling the harness by the steering shaft, the negative battery cable, and all the fusible links I had repaired. I could not recreate the problem. WTF?? any ideas?

Let me also add....
I went out today, and couldn't get it to start at all. The radio/ dash lights would only come on when the key was in th accessory posistion. When on ignition the light on my cd player would flash, but not get power long enough to load the cd. It cranks, but I assume isn't getting spark (wouldn't start on starting fluid). I'll work on it more tomorrow, and keep updating in case anyone else has this issue ever again.

So after probing around with a test light I found a lose connection to the ignition wire at the base of the column. I repaired that, and got the truck to start. After playing around with it for a while, I realized it has less to do with steering and more to do with shaking the truck. It will sit and idle until you truck shakes, the volt meter gos to zero... the temp gauge goes to high the radio cuts out, lights flash and it dies. The CEL came on, showed a code 12, 41, and 55. I assume the code 55 was from dieing, the 41 is a voltage regulator field open code. maybe from a grounded wire some where. any ides where to start?

If someone could send Ramtech over this way, I would appreciate it. My PM's arnt enabled yet.

An open regulator circuit can't be caused by a grounded wire but it can be caused by a bad connection or broken wire. The code itself indicated either an open or short can be the problem. Code 55 means that there are no more codes to display. 12 means that the PCM has lost battery power within the last 50 key cycles. You should pull the steering column covers and sheck the connections at the ignition switch. I'll try to find a wiring diagram and see if I can narrow it down more.

I figured it out. The harness that runs above the transmission is grounding out to the transmission tunnel. I put some conduit around it and ziptied it up out of the way. It runs and drives fine now, but the temp and amp gauges still act crazy. I cleared the codes, and it now shows no codes.

Glad you got it fixed. Sorry but I started to laugh. If it dies when you go to the right then it may be an Indy or NASCAR model and is designed to go left all day.

Any help on which wires are to the volts and temp gauges in that harness would help. Thanks ramtech.

Well, I decided to drive the dodge to work yesterday about dusk. It did great and didn't die once. But coming home from work was a completly different story. With every bump the dash lights would dim, headlights would flash, abs light comes on. it died at every stop light. Thinking maybe I should test the charging system since it acts up worse when the lights are on.
