I tried this yesterday and it never hit MDS and seemed way more responsive. Also I noticed my mpg avg went up from 15.3 to 16.0 over a 60 mile mixed driving run (my usual) but that could be a coincidence.....my truck is coming up on 1K miles so is loosening up a bit which could account for the increase, but then again it could also be that I'm using Shell fuel as opposed to Holtzman (local distributor to my other gas station)......just telling it straight.
Thanks. The only thing is mine is a column shifter. Do I just make sure that I put it in 6th?

To get full access to all gears yes, you need to select 6th.....mine is the floor shift but it is only selecting the maximum gear you want access to anyway, its essentially a limited auto, but at least MDS is off

Default Best advice to date

This is simply the best advice and tip that I've seen on here to date.

I had taken my RAM into the dealership previously for what I would consider "rough shifting" for the transmission and a "thud" sound coming from the rear end when coming to a stop.

Now, the truck is much more responsive running in "5" and with MDS turned "off", the transmission doesn't try to constantly "hunt" for a higher or lower gear. I also noticed less hesitation, but I'm curious to see how this will affect gas mileage (I currently only get around 14.5mpg in the city and 16 on the highway).

I read in another post that the "thud" noise I was hearing when coming to a complete stop was a known issue with the 32 gallon gas tank, where when full or almost full, the force of the gas in the tank causes a "thud" sound when you stop.

Now, this truck is finally living up to its hype (minus the advertised mpg), and coming from a previous 2x Nissan Titan owner, this says a lot.

Keep up the good word, Dodge/RAM, this truck is awesome. Superchips, if you're listening, we need a dang tuner for our 2011+ model year trucks.

I like useing the tow mode anyway , like the way it holds the shifts at a higher rpm and all, I just deal with the mds if Im on the interstate.

I started driving in tow/haul mode most of the time, I went from hating the transmission to loving it. Seems to hold the gears and not hunt for where it should be.

However, with the MDS you can get awesome mileage on the highway. I drove from Pittsburgh to Atlanta round trip, $220 in gas! At one point the wife called me about 4 hours in and I said "I think my Ram is making gas, I'm not even needing a fill up yet.". The computer said my average was 21.7mpg.

I have the 2009 HEMI with the 5 forward gears & then DRIVE, which is 5th Over Drive

While in 5th Over Drive, everything is set up to use MDS, if your vehicle does not need all 8 cylinders, like driving across flat land or going down a grade, but if your going up almost any grade, MDS kicks out & you go back to 8 cylinders

In town i don't use Drive, once i turn onto the highway, i shift into the Drive position

The TOW/HAUL button changes the shifting points to a higher RPM, that way you are using the Torque of the engine to get the towed load moving easier
I have not tried it, but It may also help when you want to go from Light to Light as quickly as possible

I really don't see the big deal with having the MDS on, maybe if I had aftermarket exhaust the sound mite be an issue. I personally like the sound of my factory exhaust and its no big deal to just (blip) push the throttle down a bit to make it downshift. I do understand that a lot of you are in hilly/mountainous terrain and its probally really noticable but my trips La to Fl are flat ground and I have yet to feel it engage or dissengage!
