Default Black soot around gas cap

Does anyone know what causes black stuff to show up around the gas cap?

Thanks

It might not be sealing properly. Is it a new cap? Whereabouts on the cap are you seeing the material?

The seal may also be breaking down a bit in the cold weather and leaving behind some residue.

The cap is about 2 years old. The black stuff is all over inside the gas door and even comes out around the outside of the door. Maybe the seal is bad. This has been happening for a long time.

It may not be the cap or fuel system. Take a look for any vents into this are through the body panel, then look behind that panel. It may be something else coming through the drain vent at the bottom of the fueling cavity.

That makes sense. I'll check it out. Does the charcoal canister connect to that side? The canister itself is on the passenger side.

Thanks for th help,
George

Your purge cannister, or a line to it, may be blocked but I am thinking something else is coming up into the drain vent.

I'd clean out the area, then run it a bit, then go back and look to see where it has started creeping in from and go from there.

OK, I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for the quick response.
