Default 3.55 or 3.92 Gears? Want 35's and lift..

Hello,

I was trying to figure out if I wanted to go with 35's and 6" lift on my truck. It came down to if if I had 3.55 or 3.92 gears..

I have a 2007 1500 4.7 4x4 with Tow package and stock 20" Oem wheels. I always heard that if your truck came with the 20's that it came stock with the 3.92 gears, but I don't think this is the case with me.

I called Dodge yesterday and gave them my VIN number and they said I have 3.55 gears. I'm not sure If they are correct or maybe I just don't want to believe them. Can anyone clarify If my truck should come with the 3.92 or is there somewhere else that I can check on the truck to see for myself?

-Thanks for any help.

Sadly, the SLTs only came with 3.55 to my knowledge. If the dealership already did the VIN check, then, unless a previous owner did a gear swap you'r stuck with the 3.55s. If you really want to upsize the gear ratio, there are plenty of gear shops that can do it at a decent price, just remember you have to do both front and rear diffs with a 4x4. You might even think about 4.10s to get a noticable difference over the 3.92.

I don't think the size of the stock wheels have any bearing on the gears. Best bet is to get a build sheet for your truck. While it wold be "better" to have 3.92's w/ the bigger tires, yo will still be ok. Just don't expect it to shoot out the hole very quick.

Well I just called 3 other Dodge dealerships and they all said I have 3.92's. I guess the first time I called they were just Idiots.

I want 3.92 because I am getting a 6" lift with 35"s and I just want it to pull it a little better than the 3.55 and not put the trans/motor in more stress.

True you get a little less stress with 3.92's but it is going to be very painful off the line. 4WD 4.7 does not help. I would save up for 4.10 or 4.56 down the road.

I am defiantly going to save for some 4.10's in the future, It just help ease my mind that I have the 3.92's right now so i won't be putting to much stress on the tranny/ motor until I get the 4.10's.

the to-do-list changes everyday lol. I am still getting tint, ect. I'm just trying to make up my mind about wheels and tires now. Most likely a 6" lift with 35x12.50x17.

I want a 17x10 wheel with 4.5 backspacing but it is getting hard to find that.

Well, if you ended up with the 3.92s then you're laughing. I hadn't thought about the ratios between the 17s and 20s being different, but it would make sense as the tire diameter is over 2.5" difference; the 17s only being 29.75, and the 20s just over 33".
