Default Drivetrain question

Hello-

Just picked up my new 2011 Ram 2500, 5.7 Hemi, 4x4 last week.

Love the truck, it's been great so far.

Just have one concern. Seems after accelerating and leveling off and trans. goes into overdrive, I'm getting what sounds like a low-toned howling/growling sound. It is less noticeable when speed increases.

When engine is completely warmed up, the sound is less prominent.

My friend, who is a test engineer at the Chrysler Tech center advise me to just drive it as the parts need to break-in and mesh together.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

The truck has a mere 400 miles on it right now.

Thanks!

I agree w/ your tech friend.

It it continues have it checked. No worries, you've got a decent warranty period, I would assume

Is it possible you're hearing an exhaust tune change (drone) when the MDS drops from 8cyl to 4cyl?

Do the 2500's have MDS? I thought it was only on the 1500's.

I also agree w/ your friend the truck is still getting broken in and your still getting used to it. Although Ive never bought a "new" truck whenever Ive gotten a new one Ive always heard sounds that sounded off to me and a few thousand miles later nothing was broken and that odd sound was normal and I had figured out why and forgotten about it.

Default Update

Had truck for a week now. Noise getting worse. I'm not a mechanic, but it sounds like a messed up torque converter.

Today I called my salesperson and told him about this. He said it is definitely not normal. He set up an appt. in service for me.

Tomorrow night I will drop it off. They said they will have a car for me to use.

I will post results of the service visit when I get the truck back.

Default Transfer case

Got word from dealer yesterday. Noise diagnosed as a defective transfer case.

They ordered a brand new one and is scheduled to arrive Monday. Service writer promises truck back by Monday night. We'll see.

So far dealer treating me OK. Free Dodge Avenger to drive while my truck is in service, so I at least have transportation.

$38k for a brand new truck with less than 500 miles on it with this kind of repair already? Starting to wonder if I made the right decision.

Have a good weekend all!!

Picked up truck this morning and drove it 2 miles and turned around and headed back to the dealership. Howling still present, just as loud as before.

The tech that put the transfer case in (the guy spoke very broken english and was hard to understand) went for a ride and all he could say was "Just keep driving it".

Very unsatisfied with that answer, I took the service manager for a ride and he acknowledged there was a noise that was not normal and he had never heard that before on another truck.

Now he wants to call Chrysler and get them involved. I took my brand new screwed up 38k Ram home because he won't get to call Chrysler until next week. I wanted to leave the truck with them because it makes me sick to my stomach to drive it and listen to the howling and grinding. He wanted me to take it home more so because he was worried he would have one more vehicle to move and clean off due to an impending snow storm. What a joke!

Can any of you Ram/Chrysler experts tell me what the hell Chrysler would do that a supposed servicing dealer should do??

I've got a real pretty new truck in the driveway that looks great but sounds like a real P.O.S. when you drive it.

I'm really hoping that Chrysler offers me a buy-back for this thing. I know I will end jumping through all kinds of hoops for it, but it will be worth it to get rid of a lemon.

Sorry, about the the cry baby vent session, just very disappointed.

Any thoughts or any new direction would be appreciated.
