Default PCSing from Fort Drum NY to Fort Lewis WA...

Wow...6 years, SIX YEARS, I have been at this WRETCHED post...finally clearing. I am so ready to be out of this place. When I came down on orders for Fort Lewis in February of this year I was tickled! Ready to leave the salty roads, and keep my new Ram fresh and clean for the forseeable future.

Anyway, has anyone here been to Lewis? Comment's or concerns on the drive/Housing/units etc? Its 3,000 miles from base-to-base. Through the Rockies/Cascades in winter...yikes. Wont be my first long trip, though. I moved (drove) from Anchorage, Alaska to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas as an 18 year old, making my way to University of Texas, Arlington for College.

I'm not towing anything, just throwing some tuff boxes in the bed of the ram with the wifey and I's basic essentials, some sandbags and GTFO of dodge...(no pun intended). This is my first PCS, so I am kinda new to all this. I hear the Seattle/Tacoma area is gorgeous. Thoughts/Things to do/Good (and bad) places to live?

Congrats on the move. I've been to Lewis and the Seattle area a couple of times. Nice area. Great place to take up SCUBA diving. They have the Giant Pacific Octopus to see and plenty of seals to play with. If you want to take up the hobby, let me know I can hook you up with a great instructor.

As for the drive across. Only issue would be road closures this time of year, WY can be a nasty place in the winter. If you have the time, go south from NY then west through AR, TX, NM and into AZ, then NW through AZ, NV, OR, and on into WA.

Not going that far south, I dont get paid the extra to deviate from the route, and really dont want to come that far out of pocket for $1500 extra in gas. I am taking I-90 to I-94, to I-90 to I-5.

I was stationed at Ft. Lewis. Beautiful country, I hope you like the rain though. I swear it rains from October through May every damn day. The Cascades are beautiful and there is so much you can do there. Don't be like me take advantage of it.lol. Spent most of my time when I wasn't in the field drinkn and carousing.

I live just South of there. It's a nice area, pretty typical near the post as you would expect to find near any military post. Weather is wet, some snow from time to time but they don't salt the roads.

I think you'll like it!

well hello buddy, glad to see people not only from my area but coming to fort lewis..sweet man, ive been here in fort lewis since july 08 and let me tell you...when people say it rains alot.....there not joking. i hate the rain because my beautifull truck cant stay clean haha. but its amazing when the weather is right, lots of good mudding spots if your into it. I hope your ride is a good one, i know they suck, ive drove from texas to washington 6 times and it never gets easier. If you need someone to show you around ill be happy too. And your coming just in time for snowboarding season.

As far as housing, the list for on post housing is pretty long, i wouldnt recommend living north of fort lewis(tacoma or lakewood area) i would recommend looking in lacey. traffic is going to be MUCHHH better coming and going to work.

Armyof One: I was stationed at ft dum for 12 months. It was white when I got there and it was white when I left. Good luck at Ft Lewis. Make sure you take extra wet weather gear.
