Default 4 Wheel Drive problem...I think!?!

I have been searching these forums for a thread on my little problem for about two hours. With that said, I apologize in advance if this question has already been answered before.

My 05' 1500 sat for approximately one week and was driven once in that week. I went to get it today and when I began driving I heard this loud banging sound. It is coming from the front driver's side near the tire. I looked under it while it was driven very slowly and couldn't see any thing that would be causing the loud "clanging!" I also checked the 4 wheel drive system thinking that it was stuck half on and half off. I put the transmission in neutral and turned the 4 wheel drive dial through all three modes. It sounded like the transfer case was easily engaging however the clanging was still there when I began moving again. Then, when I turned the wheel to the left to put it back in its parking spot it seemed that the banging/clanging got worse.

I am really at a loss and do not want to have the truck towed from my house. It was very cold while the truck was sitting and the only thing that I can think of is that a solenoid was/is frozen and is not allowing the gears in the front differential to disengage? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Well I only was driving at low speeds because of the noise. Im not going to strip the gears and end up costing myself more money. Also, I have not hit anything. Like I said in my original post the truck sat for almost a week and only one person drove it once during that time. That person says that nothing was wrong with the truck when it was put back!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Probably the wheel hub assembly.. i had mine go bad on my 07 hemi just recently and sounds exactly like what yours is doing, try jacking the truck up and move the wheel up and down and side to side if there is any movement in either of those motions then thats likely what it is.. hope that helps

Danny929 I had the truck towed on Monday and on Tuesday the mechanic called and told me that it was the wheel bearing. It cost about $300.00 to fix and it only took a day. If the other side goes out I will just replace it myself. Just got my truck back today!
