Default Check engine light

So the check engine light comes on and off for the past year or so, and everytime I check the code on my superchips tuner it reads "EVAP perge system performance". I told my mechanic this and he said it was probably just my gas cap, so I changed it and it still comes up. Any suggestions or someone who had the same readout?

Hey Dean, I'm sorry Sir I erased the code, but when it comes up again I will post it and get a hold of you. It keeps happening, it's just a matter of time.

I get that same code every now and then, I usually take my gas cap off and put it back on and click it a bunch of times and the code goes away

definitely had that code lots o times. However, since I've been gripping my gas cap differently (around the outside circumference instead of using the protrusion across the front) it hasn't come up in a long time. I think the torque setting for the break away on the caps is a little week. Try grasping it around the edge, squeezing it hard so it doesn't slip while you tighten it. Seems to work and I didn't have to replace my gas cap. I'm an uber cheap a$$.

There are some vacuum lines that go to the fuel system evap cannister in the front that get old and crack. Sometimes they work themselves loose from the cannister. Either condition will also set that code.

The most common is a loose, cross threaded or failed gas cap.

Nothing in the last month, I have been really paying attention to making sure the gas cap is nice and tight and making it click once then almost twice. No check engine light yet...so far so good there
