Default 4wd issues

Hey all new to the forum, so I'm gonna see if you guys can help me. I have a 99 ram 4x4 with 120k. We recently got some snow up north here and when I try to put my truck in 4wd I get a loud "bang" when I step on the gas, and then some grinding...feels like the whole transfer case is falling out ?? Any ideas ?

Sounds like you have transfer case issues. How's the fluid level?

I'd focus on the case and front driveline.

Fluid levels are good no issues there, I was thinking of the front case and driveline as well. I'll check it out when I get a chance. Thanks guys !!

Check your u-joints on the front shaft and axles.

I just had the same exact problem. I ran 4wd for through mud, snow, ice, and sand on and off for two weeks without problems. Went to Publix grocery to buy milk and had to shift into 4wd to make it into the entrance. When I got into the parking lot I shifted out of 4wd, I hit a dry spot in the parking lot while turning and the 4wd was not fully engaged. I heard a loud pop and now I have the same noise you have. I discovered the drivers side axle ujoint and the hub ujoint are completely snapped in half. Now I have to replace the left axle and hub. Hopefully nothing is messed up in the differential. Sounds like your transfer case is working, check your u joints and front axles.

I am thinking it's definatly u-joints. Truck is pullng to the left really hard wearing the drivers side tire and now when slowing down I hear a clicking out of what seems to be that side of the truck.

Ouch! I'd be checking the front drive line first....then the T-case. The T-case is pretty tough compared to the external drive line components. Good Luck with your repair, and keep us posted.

if its popping out of fourwheel drive when you hit the gas and then its grinding your shift fork inside the transfercase is worn out, me and my freind just replaced the transfer case in his truck and had it rebuild at a guys in town he took it apart and showed us the bad part, the shift fork was completely worn out. the people before you probably shifted it carelessly in and out of four wheel, my truck and transfer case has allmost 262,000 miles on it and it works great i never had to do anything to it because of a carefull previous owner i know well, besides top if off with fluid thats about it. these transfer cases in these trucks are supposed to be on the fly shift transfercases but i deffinately dont think thats true, i tried putting it in four wheel going about 25 and it didnt even wanna try to go in it just grinded, its bull lol.

allways slow down below 10 before u go in or out of 4 wheel, but yea i would have to say the shift fork deffinately, my buddys dodge was doin the exact same thing..
