I had a 2000 Sport with the 5.9. It was a real pig when I first had it.

I threw in a K&N intake and a superchip programmer and the milage increased quite alot. Mind you I left it in the towing mode. (performance mode is real hungry) you still have to run 91 octane but there is gobs of power at passing speeds 60 to 140km but seemed to conserve fuel just cruising
I would average 580 to 620km a tank (tank was 95L)

Good luck

Welcome to the site KTM11.

I was getting 10 mpgs before winter hit, my last tank was like 7 or 8.
I have 4:10 gears in mine, DIY intake.

Need to get a superchips.

Default 8.8 Ain't Great

How coincidental - I joined this site this very day, looking specially for information on how to improve mileage. I just bought my truck, and ran the first tank through it. After paying over $70 to fill it, I only got to 200 miles before the tank was way low. Calculated out to 8.8 mpg. Empty, not hauling anything but my @$$. That's disappointingly low esp. as gas passed $3/gal around here. That's 34 cents a mile. Dang

Vacuum leaks are critical on a computer controlled engine . Low engine vacuum makes the computer think your on the gas pedal harder than you actually are . Yes the plenum gasket leak could effect it . But you would also have other symptoms accompanying it . Another thing you also need to consider is coolant temperature . Thats one reason why the manufacturers run such a hot thermostat in them . My SRT car has a 203 degree in her right now from the factory . Good for the winter , keeps me nice and cozy while driving , but not real good on the performance side in the summertime . Another thing is that the fuel companies in the winter time , due to the colder weather , produce an oxygenated fuel . Helps with emissions but horrible for gas mileage . Last year while we were experiencing the 3 blizzards we had here in the mid atlantic area , I was getting a whopping 7.6 mpg . Pretty cool eh . This past summer I put a new water pump on my truck and went over the engine pretty good while I was there . I did find several things that did help with my economy . I have posted a couple picture of a vacuum line that had 3 vacuum leaks . I could faintly hear them but it took me a while to trace them down . Follow the line all the way from the throttle body to the very end . Examine every rubber hose connection real close and see what you can find . Post up your results .

in the winter the gas companys have to put even more adatives in the fuel so your get less fuel actually and that accounts for some drop in the winter milage i knew the truck was a fuel hog when i bought it but i am going to buy a tuner they say it helps alot hey even if it a few mpg thats alot when theses trucks love it like they do
