I had my 2001 1500 into a shop today to check the why engine light was on. The guy there said the oxygen sensor was bad and could cause poor MPG. He quoted me $400.00 to change it. How hard is it to change the oxygen sensor and how do you do it?

You need a special socket to change the 02 sensor and $400 sounds ridiculous to me. I've heard of people that had "bad" 02 sensors that helped their gas because it sent incorrect info back that used less gas

Thats way to much . You should have two of them , one before and one after the convertor . The one you'll need to change is before the convertor . Just unplug the wiring harness and unthread the old one out of the exhaust pipe . In stall in reverses manner .

TLars, your truck gets about the same, maybe 1mpg better then mine. I think we'll always see a little bit worse mileage out of ours due to them being 3/4ton. It takes a little more oomph to get them up to speed.

IDK about yours but mine is a club cab and a long bed and has a towing package so it's about the heaviest combo you can get the 360 in I think.

I guess I can quit crying about my lousy mileage as it seems to be about normal.

I average between 10-12 mpg depending on the time of year, winter being the worst. I have superchips on performace, e3 plugs,CIA and flowmaster. And I almost forgot, a right foot made out of lead lol.
