Default Rear End Howling

Hello all,

I have a 2010 RAM 1500 that has a howl in the rear end that I cannot seem to get fixed.

It happens when I'm driving along at 30-35 MPH in 2nd gear. Lately it has started expanding the range that it occurs and has gotten louder since I bought new tires.

I have taken it to the dealer 5 times since March for this and they say it is normal for it to happen, as they think it is play in the rear end, and just loud because my truck is so short.

So far they have diagnosed it as a wheel bearing, rocks in the brakes, an axle bearing, the rear end, and the tires. I've had a wheel bearing replaced, rocks cleared, and the tires replaced (because they were worn)

I don't feel any vibration in the gas pedal and the rest of the truck is sound. It does not matter if it's in 4WD or not.

I have a regular cab, short bed truck with the 5.7.

I'm taking it to another dealership in 2 weeks when I get a chance to go to Anchorage.

Anyone have any ideas?

Some kind of excessive wear in the center section IMO, carrier/and or pinion bearing. How many miles on the truck?

My 2010 had a recall for the pinion nut however I would expect the dealership would know of this and would have checked it on yours. If it backs off you would have issues with howling or worse have the rear end seize and snap the driveshaft.

The truck has about 55000 miles on it. They have not opened up the differential yet, so I may get them to open it up when I take it in next.

As far as I know, the recalls have been taken care of. The Carfax said there were no active recalls, and I bought it as a certified used from a Chrysler dealership. So I would hope that they would have taken care of it then, but I know how it is.

You said they replaced the axle bearings, they would had to pull the diff cover off to do that??????

Actually, that was one of the diagnoses that one of the techs came up with. I had a wheel bearing replaced. That was my initial thought.

One of the times I took it in, three techs drove it and one thought it was tires, one thought it was an axle bearing nand one thought it was the differential.

My truck with the 3.92 gear set always had a howl between 40-45 mph. This is something that is associated with gear sets that have different cut for larger numerical gears. My 67 Plymouth runs a 3.91 gear set and has always made a similar noise at close to the same speed range so I assumed it normal in my truck.

I had the pinion nut recall completed and it sounded the same. A few months ago at 65 k my pinion bearing gave up the ghost on my way home from CT. Made it home but it was evident it didn't have much life left.

Dealer rebuilt every bearing in the rear end and now it is quite as a mouse. I think it had a pinion issue from day one which might have been accelerated by over torqueing the recall pinion nut.

Point being, make sure they take a good hard look at it because you might end up rebuilding your own rear end out of warranty. Thankfully mine is still in powertrain.

That is very good to know. I will be sure to press them to look at it.

The last thing I need is for the rear end to take a dump while I'm in the mountains with no cell reception.

Does the howl happen under light throttle and seem to go away while coasting?

If it's louder with LIGHT throttle applied id say have the pinion bearing checked. FYI I've been through three complete diff rebuilds, and one was caused by the dealer over tightening the pinion nut.

It does happen under light throttle and goes away when I coast.

Thanks to all those who have given suggestions so far. Will definitely post the outcome when I get it checked out next weekend.
