ive said it before....if you expect your 3.21 equipped truck to be a tow monster youre sadly mistaken......your trucks biggest problem lies between the steering wheel and seat.....you equipped your truck improperly then didnt heed the warnings it gave you while using it (trans overtemp!)....id bet you killed the front pump and converter.....

5000lbs is max towing for your truck as equipped.........10450lbs is only for properly equipped trucks with 3.92 gears

That was the first year with the coil link suspension yes? If so, I know they were rated quite a bit lower than the 2010 and 2011 Ram's. Not sure why.

BTW, there are a few of those nasty internet rumors about Ram's not towing as well as a truck with leaf suspension. Any truth to this? I am still deciding between a Ram and another truck.

believe it or not the 09 rams were rated by dodges own standards which are alot more stringent then ford/chevy.....for 2010 and up an industry standard what set forth to equalize comparisons.....lol.....so dodges weight rating by the new standard set forth went up.....guess who's went down

but as stated before...if youre gonna tow get the truck equipped right....3.92 gears are a must if you plan to tow over 5000lbs......properly equipped a 1500 ram can tow 10,450lbs......

The only vehicle with any form of wheels that can haul the heaviest loads possible is a train box car or container carrier. All of those use spring suspension. Not leaf.

Hope that answers your question some what....

Yeah I always watch the trannys temp. I tow once a month a rock crawler and trailer combined weight of a bout 5K fo 3hrs + straight thru and (knock on wood) havent had any issues. Though I also have the 3.92 gears.

no worries there......3.92 geared trucks can tow alot more then that....

plus it takes a little common sense.......i pulled a 3 axle dove tail trailer from new orleans to hobbs new mexico and back with that 240 wheelbase dragster you see in my sig (on said trailer) with a 2003 ram with a 4.7 and 3.92 gears.....never missed a beat, never went under 65 and never had a trans problem.....damn trailer weighs 5000lbs....so with tool box,car and other b/s easy 10,000lbs......

Where is the Tranny temp gauge? I assume the center cluster but I didn't notice it when I test drove a Ram about ten days ago.

Yes, it is in the center information center (EVIC aka Electronic Vehicle Information Center). Scroll through the menus.

This exact scenario is what gets people to thinking that these RAM's aren't what they say. I personally am very pleased with mine and I have been a FORD man all my life, this truck is performing beyond my expectations. Although I did choose the setup I wanted for future endeavors, like towing. A gear setup is a critical part of the truck if your planning on towing heavy or on a regular basis, IMO the OP fell victim of not knowing and the dealership is at fault for not asking and educating the buyer.
