The dash cracks on the 98-01 2nd gen Rams is a common problem. You didn't get a bad one, they all cracked in those years. Nothing you can do except cover it, put a pad on it or replace it. At the dealer you are looking at anywhere from $600 - $1000 for the job. If you can tackle it yourself you can probably get a new dash top (not a cover that you apply on your old top) for $250-$300. The labor is what kills ya. Aside from that these trucks have a few issues but they are good rigs.

I'd suggest going to an automotive upholstery shop and see how much they want. Chances are they'll do it with better materials than were put in to begin with especially if you tell them you don't want stock/oem materials.

most people buy a dash cap,
some are just cloth, others are plastic, like this one

Well, the reason many don't have problems (like myself) is that the 94-97 had a different dash and was less prone to breaking. Also many (like me) keep their truck in a garage. Those two factors are major contributors to the success or failure of a dash in these trucks, but the 98+ used really poor materials.

I've heard a lot of folks complain about the dash in your generation truck. I had a '99 that was well cared for and it was just beginning to show cracks when I turned it over on the '07.
