Do I need to buy a code reader or can I tell somehow without one?

Do you have EVIC? If so, you can read the codes doing a "Key Dance".

Here's the sequence and steps to the dance:

Get in the car, close the door. Perform the following steps fairly quickly (less than 3 seconds):

Turn key to ON
then back to ACC
then to ON
then back to ACC
then to ON

If there are any stored codes, they will appear immediately, in place of the odometer. For instance an "INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH" error will set a code of P0113.

Once the codes have been displayed, you'll see "-----". If there are no trouble codes, the dashes will be the first item displayed.

After a few seconds, the display changes to "-dOnE-".

I'm guessing the IAT sensor isn't pushed in all the way.

Either not pushed in, or is turned the wrong way. The open part of the sensor has to face the air filter.

My guess is the sensor also. I installed my Volant and never had a problem. Let us know what you discover. Might also consider a Diablo Preditor also and it will read your codes as well as help other areas of power and performance. Best bang for the buck in my opinion.

Good point on the IAT sensor. Also, if the filter had a lot of oil on it, some might have gotten on the sensor. Some electrical component cleaner will do the trick.

Lastly, make sure all your connections are tight.

Most auto parts stores will read a code for you for $0

I'll check the IAT sensor, it is in all the way but it might be backwards, didn't think of that.
