Default Downstream O2 sensor and fuel economy 11MPG highway

So I recently got my 04 hemi ram with 105KM on it or about 65 Miles on it. It had a CEL for p0157 which is bank 2 sensor 2 02 sensor. I went on a trip up to my cottage and filled the truck up. Took 96 litres to fill at $1.14 a litre, so $110 and I got 470KM or 290 miles out of the tank cruising at 110 KM/H or 68MPH. So thats about 11MPG. My question is what can I do to improve this? From all I was reading the downstream O2 sensor doesnt affect fuel economy just tells if the cat is working, the upstream O2 sensor is what controls the fuel mixture. I have changed the O2 sensor since getting back and the CEL is gone but from the short highway drive I have took fuel economy seems to be the same. Thanks

470km to a tank is good for a ram. I do mainly highway and im lucky to get 500 to a tank in my 06 hemi with the mds. The 04s get even worse mileage. Also they add oxygenator to the gas in the winter which is going to hurt your your mileage im currently doing city driving and gettign 11mpg. Also anything over 100km/h kills mileage i drove from stratford to toronto and around downtown for a while and burned 3/4 of a tank. I also assume that you were loaded fairly heavy if you were off to the cottage. So unfortunatley i would say theres nothing wrong. You could try a tuner or a CAI, make sure your tires are full and try to keep off the gas lol. I would wait till summer and if your still suffering look into it deeper.

How can you improve your mileage? Get a Honda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, etc. A Ram is a gas guzzler, not a gas sipper. I don't even bother figuring my mileage. I just fill it and forget it.

I was driving a 5.9 before this and the mileage was better then the Hemi!!! 470 to strictly highway driving is garbage, I was expecting at least 550... Truck was empty all I had was 1 person and 1 bag in the truck. Cruise was set at 110km/h for the whole trip. Wester you said you do city driving and get 11MPG which is understandable but not 100% highway driving and getting 11MPG

I had a 96 1500 ex cab 4x2 5.2/5spd with nearly 250K miles, I just traded for this 06. It had a bad O2 sensor and it helped the MPGs. The computer thought the truck was running rich and leaned everything out. I drove it that way for almost 6yrs. I got an average of 18-19 MPG. On a long trip I could get rightat 22. I wish I knew exactly what was wrong with it because I'd bottle it and sell it. Best to ya.

When im on the highway i get 16-18 avg. Im at the point where i just fill it and forget it. i do a tank a week and ill keep using my ram as a daily until i cant afford it. Im really suprised your 5.9 got better then the hemi cause those things are notorious for guzzling.

Try running fuel injector cleaner through it for a couple tanks. Check your spark plugs. Also was it windy driving cause that will crush mileage in a hurry. The best ive had the computer saying is 21mpg at 100km cruise on a flat highway in the summer. Between city and highway i usually avg 15 mpg. I think ive got 500 km out of a tank twice maybe and ive had the truck 2 years.

I agree. I use ATF for injector cleaner because it's cheep and does an amazing job. What ever your favorite brand is, it can only help.

well my 5.9 was in a dakota and it crushed the hemi in fuel economy id be able to go to the cottage and drive around for the weekend and drive back on a whole tank of gas... and it was only about 70-75 litres to fill... With the hemi I put in 100 litres and I doubt id be able to make it to the cottage and back on one tank. I'd prob have to fill up 30 min from home in order to get home. Spark plugs are next to look at! Air filter is practically new too. I guess ill throw some injector cleaner in, dont knw if I trust ATF in the fuel system though, I've heard it works to free up a sticky or loud lifter when mixed with the engine oil but never the gas...

Lazy O2 sensors can contribute to poor fuel economy without actually being bad. How long has it been since your last tune up? Air filter clean? How about tire pressure and alignment? Rolling resistence takes away from feul economy.
