Default 5.7 Hemi Break-in Period and mileage?

I'm a little discourged with the gas mileage that I am getting with my new 2010 Ram truck. I now have about 700 miles on my truck and I am averaging betweeen 13 and 15 mpg. Most of my driving is country roads and highway. I've been going very easy on the accelerator to try to get the best mpg that I can. The sticker on my truck showed 14 city and 20 highway. This was a big selling point for me to purchase the truck. I can set my cruise control on the highway and I only see 20 mpg if I am going downhill. As far as i can tell, I get about 11 city and 15-16 highway. I have heard that the engine will become more efficient as it breaks in. Is this true? Have any of you experienced this? And how many miles did you have to put on your truck before you started seeing the advertized fuel efficiency for your truck?

Yes, the engine will get a bit more efficient with mileage. I've noticed that with a couple of HEMI's.

Intake and exhaust will also help. With the addition of a Predator programmer I also saw a MPG improvement..once I was able to keep my foot out of it.

I'm a little over 3,000 miles and the 13 - 15 MPG's matches what I get. I wouldn't say it is "city" but a combination of county roads and highway. Strictly highway driving should get you closer to 18 to 20 MPG. I am usuing 87 octane gas because I didn't notice any big difference with the 89 except for price. I also hope the mileage improves in the future but will just have to wait and see.

Took about 12,000+ miles for mine to loosen up. Towing a MC trailer for about 1,000 miles helped out the most. Wrong time of year to be worried about mileage, too.

It took about 15000 miles for our 08 to show better mileage. You got to remember, the time of year it is, the winter gas. If we had a different rear end, I'd say this is the best truck we've had. You have to sacrifice something for performance. Just my thoughts. Good luck Doug

Only have 1200 on the ram but the srt8 took 12000 before it came alive, get 13 - 15 in town and not driving like a sissy

Wow, 15,000 miles! That's a long break-in! I even went as far al looking for non-etanol gas stations. I tanked it up a few days ago but so far, it hasn't seemed to make a difference.

These vehicles today are designed around the E10 & E15 ethanol blended gasoline,
so straight gasoline isnt gonna make much difference unless you add ignition timing.

Also, after a few oil changes, (and using a GOOD grade of synthetic oils) you`ll notice a slight MPG increase.
At 5,000 miles, its pretty much done all the major break-in you`ll ever see. Check your tire pressure too,
tire pressure makes a huge difference, type of tire will make a big difference too.
Check the air filter often too, critters like to make nice homes in there.
