Couple things to give some thought to.

1. The nerf bars are pretty much necessary on the Gen 4s because they don't have a sill/step area.

2. Go to the local tint place and get the clear film put on the sills so that when someone does happen to step on them, they don't scratch off your paint. Its cheap insurance.

Thanks RB, those are both very good points. I cringe when I see the door sill scratched up in our Dakota and thats a lowly 2wd model... I can only image how scratched up that area could become with the 4x4 and winter grunge + family + dog trying to crawl/climb in and out.

Speaking of dogs, anyone have any clever ways to get a medium size dog into the quad cab? My golden retriever is aging rapidly (hips) and hates riding in the bed of the Dakota, even though it has a cap and bedding. She's a suck and would prefer lounging in the back seat space permitting.

Nerf bars help dogs climb in too?

Not exactly what you may need but its a start. I did a quick Google on "dog steps" and found a lot of them but some were pretty pricey too.

No problem and thanks!

Good luck with the truck and with whatever you decide to get.
