Default Roll N Lock cover

When my factory ordered 2011 Laramie arrives next month my dealer is having the M series Roll N Lock Tonneau installed.

I'm just wondering what other owners of this think about it? Any advice to offer? I like the idea of it but I'd like some perspective from other owners.

Thanks

Before ordering my Bak-flip G2, I had been seriously considering the roll-up types like those. So I went to a local 4x4 shop and checked out their display model. Here's what I found.

1. Look great.
2. Work great as long as you remember to keep the strap anchored where you can reach it to pull the cover closed again, otherwise you have to climb up into the bed.

3. Have to keep them cleaned off (leaves and other debris) otherwise it will all get into the canister and who knows what that could mean.

4. Water will drain through the canister. But snow and ice will not until they melt.

5. HUGE hassle if you want to take it out for carrying something that takes up the bed front to back.

6. EXPENSIVE.

Based on my observations, I just couldn't justify the cost. You may feel different.

I went for the aluminum folding for security (once its closed and tailgate is locked it can't be opened without serious effort like a pry-bar), strength (fold one panel back and I can stand on it), keeping my stuff dry.

No cover will help with mpg because your truck already has good aerodynamics plus the added weight will overcome any benefits.

When I get my 2011 Black Ram Sport Crew, I'm going to order a F1 Bak-Flip cover....this is fiberglass.....doesn't dent or scratch.....looks cool! I've also done a ton of research before making my decision.

I have the Bakflip too.. Love it.. I wanted a roll n lock until I heard they freeze badly if you have ice and snow. I already flipped my Bakflip with ice on it.. worked perfectly..

Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback. My Truck delivered about three weeks ago and I got the Roll N Lock installed. (part of the deal with my dealership)

I love it. I could see how a freezing cold winter could be a problem however. If I lived anywhere but in Victoria BC (Not often below zero here) I likely would have done the backflip cover too.

Hello,

I currently have a Roll N Lock M on my 2009 Quad cab. It has served me real well. Probably the best secure locking I have seen on any other cover period. You would have to destroy it and the tailgate to get in the bed.
Keep the track clean with the stuff they give you. It cleans and lubes and does not leave residue to collect dirt. I have had mucho snow on it, especially this past winter. i have no damage from it.

It is a good idea to brush off the snow ASAP before it freezes. It will just delay you getting in the bed. I have stood on the cover, I am 265#s, not proud of it, but no bending or damage.

read the book, follow the maintainance, and you will probably enjoy it as I have.

Good info. I am about to buy the rollnlock. My concern is my truck is outside a lot and I get a lot of snow, maybe a few below 0 days a year.
Will I be frustrated will the freezing temps and snow?

I have owned the Roll-N-Loc, The PE Jackrabbit, and currently the PE Bedlocker (electric).
All were/are great. I'm in Manitoba, and have winter about 11 months of the year (at least that's the way it feels sometimes ).

How do they perform in the winter - Terrible! but I love them. My current one is the worst of all in the winter, but will get the same unit in my next truck. Snow load is not an issue, they all handle it well. I recommend sweeping the snow off it before driving anywhere to reduce the snowbank on the back window, as the heat from the window will melt the snow and make ice.....roll tops and ice are not the best of friends.

In the extreme cold, you can open and close....a bit stiff, and may not open 100%, but still works. The problem is when the temp is below freezing, but the sun shining on the 'Black' surface makes just enough heat to melt the snow at the canister opening, and it flows toward the canister, gets to the shade about 1/2 inch in, and freezes solid. Sometimes if you catch it soon enough, you can slap the top with your hand and break the ice. If the ice is too thick and doesn't break using this method, then opening it is NOT an option, and the only remedy is to take it into a heated garage long enough to melt the ice and dry completely.

My current one has an all metal top. When it 'sun melts', it freezes every slat....and there is one slat every 1-1/2" from the tailgate to the canister. There is no 'slap it with your hand' option here....the heated garage is the only solution.

BUT, even though I have not mentioned a single positive thing, I AM on my third roll top cover, and my next truck will have one too. Masochistic?.... Heck no.....if I was that, I'd be driving a Toyota!

I agree with what everyone else says about the cold temps! Here's pics of my E series electric cover: http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=83265
