Default Throttle lift/engine braking

Hi all - I was wondering if anyone else experiences the feeling of engine braking when you let off the throttle. My truck is a 2011 quad cab Big Horn with the Hemi. When I let off the throttle, it almost feels like I am driving a manual transmission, with the feeling like the truck needs to upshift. When in comparison, when I drive my wife's '06 Grand Caravan and let off the throttle the van will "free wheel" so to speak. Anyone else experience this?? Or is this normal for the truck??

Thanks Whip, I read the thread and it does relate, but my truck doesn't downshift, it just feels like it needs to up shift. I don't know, maybe it is the same thing as what people are writing about on that thread. My '03 Dodge Dakota WOULD downshift when going down a hill with the cruise control on, so I know what that is, but this seems different. It is as if I was driving a car with a manual transmission and lets say I was in second gear and accelerating and ready to shift to third. But instead of shifting to third, I just let off the throttle and let the gear slow me down. That is what it feels like in the truck right now. So, maybe it is downshifting, I just don't know. Thanks for the thread and responding.

What gear are you in when you step off the throttle?

In the regular "D" selection. Just using the automatic tranny.

OK so you aren't in O/D so understand that you are operating at a lower gear and you will feel some engine braking just by stepping off the throttle.

Take a look at your tach and monitor it while driving and when you let off. Do the RPMs increase? Or do they hold steady and then drop?

The owners manual says that for engine braking hold the - buton on the shifter and truck will shift into the lowest safe gear for braking. perhaps this feature causes truck to use engine for braking whenever no throtle signal is present

Maddog- I thought the O/D was "automatically" engaged when the vehicle is in the "D" position and the "Tow/Haul" selection off?? I may have to get the owner's maual back to to double check that. As far as the RPM's, they hold steady and then drop off. That is why I don't believe it is downshifting.
Ben- I am familiar with the "-button", but it isn't the same as simply letting off the throttle. When I use the "-button" it drastically drops gears, like at 30 mph when you hold the "-button", it will take the tranny to 1st gear. So I think it is a seperate features that is occuring.

What I ment was maybe it uses the engine for a brake always when throttle is released hitting - just puts it in lowest gear posible for greatest engine braking

k, just for clarification purposes so the gurus out there plz step in

what we've got is called a 5 speed
so is that a 1-2-3-4-5 plus lockup on top of the 3, 4 and 5 or are we getting something else
i'm kinda old skool on trannies and what i remember is:
1-2-3-lockup
1-2-3-lockup-4-lockup

so technically, progression to me would naturally be:
1-2-3-lockup-4-lockup-5-lockup OR have we been handed a false 5-speed
where lies the 1:1 (3rd??) and the <1:1 (4th&5th??) on this puppy, anyone got a breakdown on the final output ratios??
