Default 4x4 Electronic switching

Just wanted to hop on and ask this really quick.

When I have put my truck in 4x4 mode, I've always switched into neutral and then turned the knob. Is this needed or can I just switch it while in drive? And does the truck have to be stopped?

My truck has the electronic 4x4 mode where i turn the knob.

From things that I have read on here what GT said is right. Just switch it at about 5mph or so.

Switching from 2WD to 4WD HI and back into 2WD can be done at speeds of up to 50 mph (the fastest I've done it is about 40 mph). When shifting into 4WD LOW, coast with the trans in neutral about walking speed and make the shift into or out of 4 LOW.

Only if the mode hub splines are lined up, which they usually aren't.

Like RamTech said, I have had to switch into 4-HI on the Freeway and I just slow down to about 40 and I never had a problem. I've only used 4-LO once and I was creeping when I switched it and it also engaged fine.

Another question ramtech, I am sorting out some issues I am having dealing with how my truck rides.

Are the front cv joints used when driving in 2wd on a 4wd truck? Again the truck is in rear wheel drive, but do the front cv joints get used or are they only used when the trucks in 4wd.
