Default 3/4 shift solenoid

looking to buy a 96 ram for work truck. the guy says it needs a shift solenoid. i believ the tranny is a 46RE.

Q1: do i have to drop the tranny to fix it?

Q2: he says it wont shift out of O/D. It is A/T. can i shift it manually to get it home, approx 150 miles of interstate?

Any help would be much appresh. thnx

thanks Tom. I dont have any pics right now. just got a new computer. dont have many mods done yet, not sure how far from stock I want to get as it drops the value and it is a special edition night runner. 283/400. I put a magnaflow cat back system on and cut out 2 out of 4 cats (or reignators). It was way to quiet for 500 horses. i blacked out the windows and have a CAI coming that hooks to the hood scoop for a finctioning ram air. I really want to supercharge it and keep it for the rest of my life or give it to my son. we will see when spring gets here. I will throw some pictures on here soon for u too.

I used to have a 96 R/C with the 46RE. I had to rebuild it at 67k miles. I then found out the main problem with the tranny is the fluid cloging and getting hot which warped the sleeves. If u put a tranny cooler on it is supposed to make it a much better tranny. The guy that told me that owns a tranny shop and has family with dodge trucks, so he has seen the coolers work himself. said his brother put 136k on his 46RE since, and he hauls a boat. That was a year ago so im sure he has put more miles on it since

This is the third time my tranny has gone out and it has 115,000 miles on it . The last time it was rebuilt by someone who cam highly recommended . Cost me dearly and it wasn't in bad shape when he opened it up . The truck has a factory cooler and the inline check valve has already been removed . I'm looking to do a 5 speed conversion . I've had it with automatics .

that sux. i had mine completely rebuilt for $600, but i dropped the tranny myself to save a couple bucks. i didnt know that year came with a factory cooler. learn something every day. How much does it cost other than the price of the tranny to convert? Is it plug and play or do you have to change wires, sensors, and that sort of thing too?
