Unhappy Squealing belt after belt and tensioner replaced.

Hello,

My Ram Van starting squealing under the hood this fall so I replaced the belt and the belt tensioner. Unfortunately the squeal came back within a few weeks. A friend recommended that I try a better brand of belt so I put a Dayco on and the squeal went away again but came back again within a week. I checked each pulley one at a time and they all spin freely with no noise.

Another factor is that if you squirt a touch of water on the belt while the engine is running the squeal goes away for a moment. I have also tried running the engine with no belt... There is no noise under this circumstance.

Another factor is that there is no noise until the engine warms up to temp. I have also replaced the idler pulley for a cheap shot in the dark.

It must have something to do with temperature but I just can't figure this out.

Thanks in advance.

Glad you joined us and welcome to the Z for Rams from Baltimore . Have you looked to see if you have any worn out pulleys ? Instead of the grooves in the pulley being a V shape they may be more of a u shape and not allowing the belt to settle into the groove correctly , hence belt squeal . Any of your friends have Rams ? Tell them about us . We would love to have them . You will find this site is full of a lot of talented people . So if theres any question that you need answered , just shoot away . Talk to ya soon . Tom

Another thing to consider:

When you replaced the belt, was there any oil/liquid visable? Is there any liquid around the pulleys or tensioner now? How about black power? Is there anything under your truck where you park it? I am wondering if something is leaking under your hood that is making its way to this belt or if your belt is wearing down prematurely (black power)? It may not start leaking until your truck has been running for a bit if you do have a leak. I would check under the hood for any leaks when your truck is running. Also, I would run your finger around the pulleys and other parts to see if anything becomes viable on your findger tips.

Good luck.

SB

Welcome to the Z. with what both Tom and SnowChief said but don't run your finger around the pulleys with the motor running. .

We have a lot of forums for all kinds of topics, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to post questions.

We LOVE pics of Rams.

Here's how to post them: http://www.ramforumz.com/forumdisplay.php?f=73
