Default Stuck in 4x4?

So I used 4x4 last week and when I disengaged the 4x4 the indicator did not go out. The truck is not driving as though it is in 4 wheel drive. I have read alot about the vacuum lines not working properly, but before I start replacing things I just want to be insured that I am not doing any damage to the truck by driving it. I test that I did to see if the axle had disengaged is this:
I lifted the passanger tire off of the ground and it spun freely, although the front driveshaft also spun.
Did I check anything or is this condition in both 4x4 and 2x2?
I am at a loss of what to check and how to correct this problem, I checked the vaccuum lines and they both looked good, although the shift motor spins pretty freely inside the housing, again, don't know if that is normal or some kind of bad seal.
Thanks in advance.

If you crank the wheel all the way left or right and let it roll does it brake/bind up like it's suppose to? if it does you are in 4x4 still.. if it rolls normal you are out of 4x4 and you might just have a stuck sensor.

Good luck!

if you spin the front wheel and the front driveshaft is moving then you are in 4 wheel, those stupid vacuum actuators allways go bad so replace that first.
