Default 1500 SLT Quad cab 3.55 gears with 20 rims

Hello! I just bought a 2011 150 Quad cab SLT with 5.7 Hemi, 3.55 rear end, 5 speed auto. The dealer informed me he swapped rims from another truck so mine came with 20 inch rims and tires, but the truck originally came with 17s. He will trade me for 17 inch rims if I want to. Im wondering if I NEED to change them to 17 inch rims. Im pretty sure my gas mileage will be a little better if I keep the 20s but Im kind of worried about pulling a 20 foot camper a couple times a year. Will it still have plenty of pulling power up and down the hills of Iowa (rolling hills)?

I checked with Discount Tire & found out that the 17" rims with a taller sidewall is the same ride height within millimeters of the 20" with the stock tires
the 17" tires are a bit less costly than the 20"
the 17" rims come in many more styles than the 20" rims do

that being said, get whichever makes you smile

read what some of the members have to say about their own wheels, some people do NOT like the chrome clad shiny plastic that is permanently bonded to the metal rim, the shiny plastic sort of looks cheap to some people

my Ram is the same as yours, just 2 years older, the '09 - '11 are identical, except for minor cosmetic things, like mine didn't come with a locking tailgate, & brake controller like yours should have, especially if you plan to do any towing.
you would be wise to get the backup camera, IF your radio is compatible with it

Think I'll just keep them. They look better than the 17's. I can always click it down a gear.

You'll be just fine. I have a 2009 equipped like yours. It came with the 20" tires (which really suck in the winter) and the truck pulls my 26 1/2 foot travel trailer just fine (6100 pound trailer / empty).

Check i think all the spares are 17". Whether you have 20" or 17" tires on the ground.

Hmmm, you're right. 17 inch spare. Never would have thought to check that, thanks. Guess it dont matter with 20's?

WTFC- Why do the 20's suck in the winter?

The 20s are less than stellar in the snow. They're also quite a bit heavier than the 17s, so you've got more unsprung rotating weight, which degrades ride, handling, acceleration, braking, and mileage.

Not the fact that they're 20 inch wheels, but rather the tires on them. The Goodyear's tread is wide, flat, not too deep and not self-cleaning. Compare them to the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A's. I have a set of those on my old 1999 Ram Sport. The Goodyears run over the top of snow and that packs snow in the tread, where it stays. Now you have ice covered drag slicks all the way around. The tread is not aggressive enough when it comes to stopping on packed snow and ice. The wheels just lock up and slide. It's night and day difference between the two tires. I'm not sure what I'll replace the Goodyear's with, but it definately won't be Goodyear.
