Default ETS'ing Soon....Wanting to become a Police Officer

well guys ive done my time and about to ETS out of fort lewis, WA. Moving back to my hometown of Weatherford, Tx. I really want to become a police officer, BUT, im not really sure what direction i want to go. I like the idea of Highway Patrol, but i hear that they get paid ALOT less than city cops. Whats the difference between highway patrol and State Troopers. Who gets paid more out of all Law Inforcement.

Sorry Branson, I read a good article a while back that broke down the top police agencies in DE. I know it wouldn't be the same for you, but there was some good info there. It basically said in DE, the State Police have the better pay and better retirement than any other agency in DE. Really good benefits compared to the city cops. I'm not sure how it is in Texas, but www.officer.com has some really good forums to look over.

Got this from the Texas tribune website not sure why. It wasnt listed in the article.

And for some positions, the report said, state officers' pay scale is 15 percent to 20 percent below the average maximum pay in local police departments. A trooper trainee with fewer than four years of service earns about $35,700. The most a trooper with 30 years of experience and a master's degree could earn is about $67,800 per year. An officer with the same qualifications could make on average $71,700 per year at a large local police department.

Just my 2 cents worth. As a Hiway Patrol Officer you'll likely live and work outside a metropolitan area which means significantly lower cost of living. It also means significantly lower risk.

Bransonshemi welcome to this RamsforumZ
I see you live just outside of Ft Worth, looks like they are recruiting & being as you are still in the Military, now is the time to get in touch with them, you don't need to sign up, just let them know that you are interested.
Ft. Worth has its own Training Academy, which is a plus.

You may also want to think about U.S. Border Patrol or Homeland Security, especially if you can communicate in Spanish, although they do their training in New Mexico, around Roswell & close to Columbus, a bit west of El Paso

That is a good call, if you start with your communication with them while you are still in the military, they will be communicating with you readily, they know that you are used to taking orders & have not had a chance to pick up any bad habits if you know what i mean LOL

they will be asking you to climb chain link fences & lots of other kinky exercises to qualify for the academy

The pay for LEOs is way to low and has been for many years. Same with teachers. Some pay scales just aren't right.
