Default Customer Complaints

Today I'm going to add a twist to the term "customer complaints". As a technician in a C-J-D dealership, I have a few issues with certain types of customers. These people often frequent the independent shops as well. So without futher adieu...

1. The customer that can't read the sign telling them to stay out of the shop unless escorted by an employee. I don't come to your place of employment and hover over you while you work and try to tell you how to do your job.

2. The customer that thinks their vehicle should be rushed immediately into the shop because they have an appointment. Having an appointment does NOT guarantee a technician will be available when you arrive. Much like a doctors office, we too have emergencies and unexpected delays.

3. The waiter. If you have multiple issues that need to be addressed (especially if diagnostic time is involved) don't sit in the waiting room and complain loudly about how long it's taking. Most shops offer free shuttle service - GO HOME!

4. The know-it-all (or the customer with that kind of neighbor). The only input we need from you is a detailed, accurate description of the symptoms of your problem. I'm sure your neighbor is competent and intelligent, but we really don't need his diagnosis.

5. I'm sorry we can't stock every single part for every vehicle we work on. Sometimes parts must be ordered and once that order is placed, it's out of our hands! Don't call our parts department and bitch about how long delivery is taking - sometimes parts are on back order.

6. If you have an intermittent problem, try to understand that there is a good chance we can't duplicate it in the 30 minutes you've set aside in your day to bring in your vehicle. Also, if you have an issue when it's cold, don't drive it 15 miles to get here and then expect it to get diagnosed while it's scalding hot. Plan to leave it overnight!

7. If you know you need interior work done, PLEASE clean out your car! We do NOT get paid to remove your child seats, trash, and assorted junk and we don't like working for free.

8. If you have fuel gauge issues, don't bring your vehicle in with a full tank. Removing fuel takes that much longer for us to repair your vehicle.

These are a few of the "customer complaints" I have. I'm sure there are more techs on here that can add to this list. I'm looking forward to what Tom has to add!

I can relate to every one of those customer complainers!!! I run a service department for a medical device manufacturer and I've seen every one of those issues (even the cleaning of dirty customer equipment)!

May I add #9 and #10 to the list -
9. "I know you said not to do that but I did it anyway. Can you fix it?"
10. "I bought a Vega but it needs to run like a Porche. Why can't you do it?"

Lol, too true. I think I myself am guilty of a few of those, I know enough to get myself into trouble with the wrench benders since I was a HD diesel motor tech for a while, though I can't stand a dirty interior. I'll even clean it out if I have to take it in for an oil change at a quick lube, lol.

Let's not forget the customer who buys a base model vehicle and acts like it's a maxed out highline!

I hate it when I go to the dealer for service and someone get's loud in the waiting room. "This is bull***, I can't believe this is taking so long." You know what, I don't need your frustrations made my frustration so please be quiet so I can wait for my truck in peace.

Yeah... that's me. Have an ST HEMI, A/C, power, 4x4, and that's it. Now I do treat it like a top-o-the-line though

Treating it like one and acting like it's one are two different things in my book. If I want something to mod, I'd prefer something more basic so I'm not paying for stuff I don't want or might wind up taking off. Ex: why pay for the top of the line factory wheels when you don't want what everyone else has?

Exactely why I bought the bare bones ST But yeah, I know what you mean, we had people pulling in their old beaters or base models and wanted us to treat them crystal... don't wanna scratch the rust ya know, lot of time put into getting it just right.

11. Customer brings car in for driveability issue , and the low fuel light is on .
12. Get in to drive the car for the first time , you grab the steering wheel and it feels like someone just got done eating a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken . Lovely !
