What's "headlight baking"? Is that like cooking them till they turn dark?

its cooking them in the oven until the come apart so the components on the inside can be custom painted and you can also put custom lighting or whatever other knick knacks you'd like to put into your headlights. It's basically the gateway to making custom headlights out of your stock ones.

you dont remove it, after ur done painting, put em back together, heat them up again, and squeeze them together tightly, reuse the sealant

really!? well too late for that. im working with an old AAC tech and he suggested removing it because that sealant is more like plastic weld and it normally doesnt react to that well...i plan on putting all new silicone in the channel.

I had to warm mine up a couple of times, but not like when I baked them open. Just kept them warm, so 5 min at 250F and I acutally used a flat blade screw driver to scrape the sealant out. Then I used a clear sealant. Don't use another color cuz it'll show when it squeezes out.

I agree with the others that you should have left the sealant alone. Second mistake was to paint them before removing it. Only thing I can think is strong enough to remove it would be Carb cleaner or brake cleaner, so your paint job will get all screwed up. I'd say if you can't make it work get a new pair and start over.
