Default 1998 Dodge Ram 4x4 will not lock in 4 wheel Drive

Went out to the desert yesterday and to my surprise my front axle will not lock in. The truck is from Michigan and has rust on the undercarriage. I found a crack in the red vacuum line so I fixed that and then was stumped. I know it worked before I rebuilt the engine because it was towed with the rear axle off and I had it in 4L to use the front wheels to drive into my garage. It is not the transfer case as the front drive shaft is spinning. It doesn't seem to have vacuum on the red or black line. AI have 1 white vacuum line feeding the 4 prong switch and I have a green that is with the white as a breather or vacuum break correct? how do you test the switch or if anyone might know what it is please let me know. Thanks!

i had th exact same thing go happen to my 98 ram from wisconsin, it was a hair line crack in the vacum hose, you need to check the hole vacum system over very good to see if theres just the smallest of cracks. And if theres no cracks it could be the actuator on the front axle housing.

Check on ebay, there is a manual cable you can install to replace the vacuum system. I saw it for about 200 dollars. It installs straight to the dash, when you pull the knob about an inch it engages the axles. The actual shift on the floor is not changed, it is still the same.

Anyone know where I can get the complete vacuum kit for this truck? I have it rigged up to work but having new lines would be way better.
