Default Stroker Kit

Hello all,

So I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 with the 5.7L Hemi Head. I have a Lance camper; dry weight is 3,500 pounds and I tow a 19 foot Boston Whaler which is around the same. I have Firestone airbags to help the weight with a cold air intake (like it does much anyway).
I live in Colorado so mountain passes are common. Truck is underpowered but I love my camper and boat. I don’t want a big diesel payment so I am considering adding a stroker kit (http://www.moparproshop.com/inc/sdetail/4383/4429). I am considering headers but really want to keep the prices down. Pretty sure my tranny is a 545RFE and I am considering about beefing that up as well.
Truck has 180K miles on it. Question, should I go with the above or just sell it and get a diesel? I just hate car payments, wife and I want kids and dropping tall cash for toys just doesn’t make sense. I guess I can just let it sit but damn, we enjoy our Lance and boating – nothing better. Million opinions out there – should I modify what I have or get a 2005-2007 5.9L Cummings? Just don’t want something with a million miles and as peeps know, diesels are tall cash. Ideas??
Mike

Are you tuned? Is it using any oil? You could tune it and do a cam swap and it would drive like a different truck. And that's not crazy money. Or at least it doesn't have to be. You could cam it for towing and you would be amazed at what it would drive like. I'm just saying if you are on a budget.

You can find better deals on the stroker rotating assembly. But you still have to do some other things to it get it to run. Has to be tuned. There is some machining. Are you going to overbore it? What about gears and torque converter? It is a slippery, slippery slope.

What gears do you have? 3.73's most likely? A swap to 4.56's would make a huge difference. Throw a good torque cam in with it and custom tuning to optimize it (you have one of the best years for it), you'd have a capable towing machine without the stroker.

that it's a ton of money for a stroker kit. Try this one

www.flatlanderracing.com/callies-hemi-kits.html

however swapping gears and freeing up the exhaust with a tune added would be your best route.

180000 miles is a bit to me. but I've been proven wrong before. if its a good truck and dosnt burn oil or have major issues , you have a good truck to work with. putting money into a good truck is cheeper then buying a new one. plus your cai will work great with a good cam , exhaust, maybe headers. gears. plus all the work you can do with the tranny. lots of options but take some time and put a budget together and se what ya can get.

I went with the Manley rotating assembly and had them balance it. Just waiting on the new tune.
