Billman - you should have no in/out play. In terms of the other direction, the only thing I can tell you is that at least with the turbos I work with in the Buick world, the experts say you should have no more than 1/64" lateral deflection or side to side basically...

Oh, and forgot to add - I had a similar situation with the impeller in a TA51 turbo I ran a long time ago - seemed like some of the blades were a smidge higher to my naked eye, and it was a brandy new unit.

I showed the turbo to 2 professionals (they rebuilt turbos but most of the time they replacing them :-D) today and they said that this can be in the casting but as long as its not hit or something is missing and it's balanced with it, then there is no problem whatsoever.
