Default buying a cummins...need tech help asap!

I am getting ready to buy a cummins but i don't want to get ripped off. I am going to buy it used but the guy is saying that it has something that i have never heard of .... "not a 53 block cummins the good ISB 235 horse block" is this a good thing? here is the whole add....

"I am selling my 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. It has the 24 valve cummins in it, not a 53 block cummins the good ISB 235 horse block. It is white club cab. It has 191,000 miles on it 5 speed manual transmission, dana 80 rear, 60 front, overload springs, rear swaybar, 4" tbe, towing tuner from hypertech. I just put calipers rotors pads up front, wheels and tires on it but the tires prob got 1/2-1/4 tread. 35's. Had an injection pump and lift pump put on about 50,000 miles ago by the previous owner. "

he's asking 10K . Should i go for it if i check it out and it's in good condition or is he just ripping me off and it's going to break down soon?

I'd take a hard look at the front end before I bought it. The Cummins is designed to go 300k between rebuilds, so keep that in mind when thinking about how long you plan to keep the truck. As for the block numbers, I can't help you there.

all right. thanks. one more question though...I have found a lot of them that are running 35's. i know that on the gas trucks, they are hard on the front and rear ends...should i worry about it on the 2500's? would this have a significant decrease in mpg? (significant in my mind meaning more than 1 or 2 mpg hwy)

I doubt the tire size will have any ill effects on the diffs but I can't speak about the fuel economy change.

The only thing I can think that he means about the blacks is he's a 24V 5.9L in place of the 12V 5.9L. The 24V was installed in 1998.5 rams and has been an absolute gem of a motor. I'd have a good look over it, but I would probably go for it if it's in good shape, and the price is respectable for a cummins of that year/engine.

ok...please try to keep replys to post about thing you know... 53 blocks were known for cracking from what i was told. diesel has its own language. im just learning it myself. and i am a certified mechanic for 25+ yrs. but i was just a gasser guy till recently

My instincts tell me stay away from this one. For 10k, you can get a newer higher mileage 24v.

If that is the case regarding your technical experience, then why post up on a very old thread with information that may or may not be true, i.e., "from what I was told" ?

And you chastise the previous poster for doing exactly what you just did?

i did research this answer before i posted it. "from what i was told " was writin by me because i have never had a 53 block crack. but many have...just didnt want anyone getting bad info. 10,000 is alot of money.
