Not sure as I am not nearly techncial enough. Will a Cummins fit into a 1500? A Cummins is far heavy than a Hemi. Definetly will need to look at your FGAWR.

Good luck and would love to know how it comes out if you actually make the change.

If the engine will fit you will need all the rest of the drive-train plus all the electronics and wiring, fuel system and most likely have to beef up the suspension if not replace it with the 2500 setup.

Wow , your looking at doing alot of work . I'm not sure if the engine will even bolt up . Plus your looking at doing the front suspension to handle the extra weight and thats just the start of it .

This swap is a LOT of work, but something I've been wanting to do for a long time. A couple of questions: which cummins is it, there are several 5,9Ls and the 6.7L as well. They will all fit into a 1500 engine bay, but you may need to notch the center channel to get proper fitment of the tranny.

Things you will need to swap:

engine and tranny (duh)
ECM for the cummins
Fuel pump and tank
Upgrade to 2500 springs to stop the front sagging
New battery as the cummins is a harder beast to crank

And if you decide not to do the swap... I know a good home for the cummins

its out of a 2001 2500 so its a 24 valve and i am moreso wandering if it is cost effective at all? like how much would it cost to get a 2500 suspension? and would i need to box in the frame or just specific places? i wont be doing much if any hauling with it so is there anything else i would need to do?

Do you have access to the donor vehicle? If so, go take a good look and compare it to your truck.

I was gonna recommend that if it totaled out due to extensive body work , rebody it with your body .

Not a bad suggestion tom. And good, cost effective is a relative term. Having all the parts, and if you know what you're doing, you could probably do it fairly cheap, but if you're gonna have someone else do it for you, then you have to ask yourself if it's worth it to YOU. If I personally had access to a 24V 5.9L, you'd better believe I'd be looking for a truck to put it in, maybe even a dakota
