Default having pinion gear problems

hi i have a 96 dodge ram 1500 the other week i did a service on the differential. i drained out all of the lube or oil and installed a new cover gasket and filled back up with gear oil drove it and drove fine. had a little rear end noise parked it and checked for leaks. found a big leak coming from pinion seal and also found that the bearing behind the seal was bad. so i ordered all new bearing for diff. all 4 of them and pressed all of them on except for the outer pinion bearing behind the seal. ok the problem iam having is when i start to tighten up the pinion nut on the yoke it gets very hard to turn. if i losen the nut and truns free hope maybe you can tell me if this is normal. also the diff has no oil should it be that hard to turn with no oil in it thanks

Glad you joined us and welcome to the Z for Rams from Baltimore . Did you replace the crush sleeve also ? As long as the threads on the pinion look fine , I'd replace the nut . Do you have any pictures of your truck ? Have you done any mods or have plans for any ? Any of your friends have Rams ? Tell them about us . We would love to have them . You will find this site is full of a lot of talented people . So if theres any question that you need answered , just shoot away . Talk to ya soon . Tom

Hello and welcome to the forum, glad to have you join us! Sorry to hear you're having problems. Had my pinion seal replaced twice under warranty since owning my truck, so I didn't do it myself, but good luck and be sure to keep us posted! Any pics of your truck? We'd love to see it! Lots of great people and info here, so any help you need, just ask and I hope you enjoy the site!
