Default 5w20 vs. 5w30 oil in Ram 2500

I have a 2010 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi. In my owners manual it states that you can use 5w30 oil in place of the 5w20 if your GCVWR exceeds 14,000 lbs. Now on occasion I do exceed that weight when I tow my boat however most of the time I run below the 14,000 GCVWR.

Now why would Chrysler give that option to run 5w30 to the Heavy Duty crowd? I know the 5w20 is spec'ed for the MDS Hemi and most likely for the Heavy Duty's to meet better fuel mileage requirements but I'm wondering if given the option is 5w30 a better choice.

Most likely because of the loads placed on the engine.

I believe it also has to do with the temp in your area, there should be a graph in your Manuel with temp ranges, I ran 10w-30 in my 03 5.7.

I agree RamTech with the heavier loads needing a thicker viscosity to protect the engine. Burkdahemi, as for a graph in my owners manual that is a negative. The owners manual spec's 5w20 as does the oil fill cap on the engine. However, their is an option to run 5w30 when operating under the aformentioned 14,000lb GCVWR. My question is fuel mileage and MDS aside (which I'm sure is behind the 5w20 spec for many of todays vehicles) is 5w30 a better choice. Obviously if your going to work the truck hard Chrysler seems to think so.

the 5W-20 just makes the Hemi with MDS work efficiently

I bet if you look at your oil fill cap on the 2500 models, it will read 5W-30 or 10W-30

many vehicle companies & ALL government agencies, use the weight standard not as what you use the vehicle for, they use the standard as to what the vehicle is capable of

If your worried about durability with the 5W20, don't. I've run 5W20 for 203,000 severe miles in my Sidewinder cammed 05 Dodge Magnum, spraying a 100 shot on the weekends, towing heavy trailers often during the week. I use either Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec or Penzoil Platinum on 5,000 mile changes, same deal with my 05 1500 QC4X4 Ram with 140,000 miles. Yes, I race it also and spray a 100 shot and it has the race cam as well. Neither use any oil, the old oil is still nice looking when I change. If the thin oil saves you gas, why not use it? These motors have very tight tolerances.

Big Ed I run 5w30 in my 2010 2500, and oil filler cap states 5w20 but owner’s manual says you CAN run 5w30 in the 2500. It is due to the extra work load put on the engine from towing and general working environment.

Good to hear from another 2500 owner. I'm really on the fence with this. I've been running Mobil1 5w30 and it's convenient since thats what I use in my wifes Chevy Tahoe. However, I wondered if 5w20 is really better for the Hemi. Some people say it's only so the MDS work properly and to improve fuel mileage. Others claim the Hemi has tight tolerances within the engine and 5w30 may not lubricate as well. Yet Dodge spec's the 5w30 for heavy hauling so that may be considered contrary to the "tight tolerance" theory.

Bottom line is I alway's run synthetic and 5w30 is what all the other vehicles in the stable use so I may just keep running the 5w30.

My next debate is whether the new Castrol Edge is worth switching too.
